Honolulu, Hawaii, May 27, 2006 - The saying goes, "Time is brain." According to the latest issue of Stroke Smart, "(Dr. Jeffrey Saver from the UCLA Stroke Center in Los Angeles) found that for every minute an ischemic (clot-caused) stroke goes untreated, approximately 1.9 million neurons, 13.8 billions synapses, and seven miles of axonal fibers are lost in the brain." Saving precious minutes, the CereTom™ Mobile CT scanner can be quickly wheeled to a patient’s bed in the Emergency Room, enabling a doctor to see whether a patient is suffering from an ischemic stroke or a hemorrhagic stroke and take appropriate measures.
May, National Stroke Awareness Month, marks the beginning of availability of NeuroLogica’s CereTom™ Mobile CT scanner to hospitals and private practices in Hawaii and Guam. Rod Huddleston of Hawaii Surgical Specialties, the Hawaii Distributor for CereTom™, shared the reactions of nurses, neurologists and neurosurgeons at the recent UCLA Brain Attack conference in Beverly Hills: "CereTom™ captured everyone’s interest. Nurses were excited about a scanner that could be moved to the patient – allowing their patients to remain stable. Doctors immediately saw the value of having scans done right in the ER, OR and ICU, allowing them to diagnose and provide treatment quickly."
Used primarily for the head and neck, the CereTom™ is an 8-slice CT scanner that images brain tissue, providing non-contrast, CT Angiography and CT Perfusion scans. It’s a compact and mobile unit that is easily transported where it’s needed; patients can be scanned in their own bed.
